Xavi: Barcelona
Gaffer Prioritizes la Liga Title
Xavi: Spanish giants FC Barcelona have
not been at their best in the recent past.
The Catalans have failed to win the La Liga since 2018-19. It became worse when they finished thirteen points behind their arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Barcelona have failed to get
continental success since 2014-15. They suffered many humiliating losses on the
continental stage, in recent years. However probably the most humiliating
moment came when they failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the
Champions League and were relegated to the Europa league. Then they failed to
win the second-tier continental competition and were knocked out by Eintracht
Frankfurt.
On top of this, Barcelona
went through the worst economic phases in the history of their club due to many
poor managerial decisions by the club’s board. Things were so bad that had it
been any other club than Barcelona, they would have been bankrupted by now.
Consequently, Barcelona lost their best player in history – Lionel Messi.
Still, Barcelona recovered from that position when Joan Laporta came back to
power.
Barcelona’s strong rise
After rejoining Barcelona, Joan Laporta has taken many bold
decisions. One of them was to bring former Barcelona football Xavi Hernandez
back into the club as the next manager.
Xavi
arrived at Barcelona, having only managed Qatari club AL Sadd. He took reign
when Barca were struggling so much that they were not even in the race to get a
Champions League spot. Xavi within a few months made sure Barcelona qualify for
the continental tournament and also finished second in La Liga.
Then
with the help of Laporta, Alemany, and Jordi Cruyff, he built a strong team in
the summer of 2022. Barcelona signed Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Franck
Kessie, Christiansen, Jules Kounde, Bellerin, and Marcos Alonso in a single
window. Xavi also revived the career of Ousmane Dembele who signed a contract
renewal with the club.
Barca’s
summer signings took no time to settle and Barcelona made s strong start to the
La Liga. Despite a 0-0 in the first match, the Catalans demolished their next
five opponents in the Spanish league. They are now at the second position in
the table behind only defending champions Real Madrid who has accumulated 18
out 18 points.
Barcelona
suffered their first loss of the season against Bayern Munich after dominating
the Bavarians in the first half while not taking their chances. So even after
the loss, they are still regarded as a strong candidate for the Champions
League. However, Xavi right now doesn’t see it that way.
Xavi
makes La Liga his first priority
According
to Spanish outlet SPORT,
Spanish coach Xavi has set La Liga as the main target for the season. Barcelona
is desperate for some on-the-field after pulling off an off-the-field
remontada.
And
that’s why Xavi wants to capture the La Liga first and think about UEFA
Champions League. However, it doesn’t mean that Barcelona will field a second
fiddle lineup in UCL. They still want to have a deep run in the continental
competition and will continue fielding a strong lineup.
However,
in La Liga, Xavi will field his strongest lineup available and will keep the
league title as his first priority.
