T20 WC 2022: West Indies Recall Lewis, Russell, and Narine Were Not Considered
T20 WC 2022: For the T20 World Cup
in Australia, West Indies management recalled starting pitcher Evin Lewis on
Wednesday. Meanwhile, they left Sunil Narine, the spinner, and all-rounder
Andre Russell out of their 15-man team.
The United Arab Emirates T20
World Cup in 2021 was the last time Lewis, a left-handed player, represented
the team. Veterans Russell and Narine, though, are players who have been passed
over by selectors in recent times.
Yannic Cariah and Raymon
Reifer, two uncapped all-rounders, were also included in the West Indies team.
Nicholas Pooran will serve as the team’s skipper, with Rovman Powell serving as
his deputy.
In domestic T20 tourneys,
Russell is without a doubt one of the most in-demand players across the globe.
He is a reliable seamer as well as a strong batter lower in the order. However,
Desmond Haynes, the head selector, stated that he was not persuaded by the
34-year-old’s recent form.
T20 WC 2022: While Russell and
Narine Were Not Taken Into Account, West Indies Recall Lewis
T20
WC 2022: “We had a meeting with Andre Russell earlier in the
year. We’re still not convinced, he’s not performing as well as we would like
to see him in the competition (CPL),” Haynes said on the
sidelines of a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match on Wednesday.
Chief Selector Haynes stated
that they had made the decision to simply move on in regard to the problem with
Andre Russell. He believes that they are searching for a player who is in good
shape and performing well in the T20 format.
According to Haynes, Pooran,
the captain, had contacted Narine. He did, however, add that he is unsure of
whether he wants to play. Narine last represented the West Indies in 2019. He
also competes in T20 leagues all over the world. Fabian Allen, the all-around
player, was also not included on the roster.
To represent the West Indies,
according to Haynes, a blend of youth and experience was chosen. He claimed
that during the selection process, they were aware of the ongoing Caribbean
Premier League. Moreover, they have been observing individuals who have been
performing really well.
West Indies, the two-time champions, will next take on Australia
in a two-match series. This will serve as a warm-up for the team ahead of the
T20 World Cup in 2022. On October 17, they will play Scotland in their World
Cup opener after the series against the Kangaroos.
