5 Current Coaches Made Their T20I Debuts as
Players After Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma, the Indian team’s
captain, has played in 15 international cricket matches after making his T20I
debut on September 19, 2007, against England.
Since Rohit Sharma played in
his first T20I, a lot of players have come and gone. After Rohit, few players
who began their T20I careers made their retirement announcements and
transitioned to coaching.
Here
Are 5 Coaches who Made Their T20I Debuts As Player
1.
Ashish Nehra
Ashish Nehra, a
former fast bowler for India, shocked the cricket world by leading the IPL 2022
with outstanding management. Nehra was named the head coach of the brand-new
Gujarat Titans for their inaugural campaign. While Gujarat didn’t appear to be
a strong squad on paper.
But Nehra made the best use
of the tools at his disposal to help the team win the IPL 2022
championship. Few cricket fans are aware that Nehra made his India T20I
debut two years after Rohit Sharma. He played in his debut T20I match against
Sri Lanka in 2009, and he retired in 2017 following a match against New
Zealand.
2.
Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid, the
current head coach of the Indian team, has played a significant role in both
the Indian Test and ODI teams for many years. His T20I career, though, only
lasted one game. Dravid was included in the T20I squad for the lone T20I
against the home team by the BCCI.
That was after several Indian
players sustained injuries during the 2011 England trip. In that game, which
ended up being his final T20I participation for the country, Dravid hit 31
runs. It is noteworthy that Dravid, who made his Twenty20 debut four years
after Rohit Sharma, is currently the Indian team’s head coach.
3. Lakshmipathy
Balaji
Lakshmipathy Balaji,
another former Indian pacer, is included on this list. He played five T20
Internationals for the country after making his debut in 2012. Although Balaji
had three three-wicket hauls in his first five games.
He was never given another
opportunity to play for the Indian T20I team. The fast bowler quickly left
all cricket formats. He is currently employed by IPL franchise Chennai Super
Kings as a bowling coach.
4.
Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel is
another MI Emirates squad coach who made the list. The International League T20
franchise selected the former Indian wicket-keeper batsman as their batting
coach.
Parthiv Patel appeared
in just two T20Is for India, both of which took place in 2011. From 2015 to
2017, he participated in three IPL seasons when Rohit Sharma served as captain.
5.
Vinay Kumar
R Vinay Kumar, a former Indian fast bowler, was just named the
bowling coach of the MI Emirates team competing in the International League
T20. During the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup, Kumar made his T20I debut for
India.
His
final match for the Men in Blue was a T20I against Australia in 2013. He
participated in nine T20Is for the team. Watching Kumar’s performance as a
bowling coach will be interesting.
